The Basics

kirby1.jpg

Here are some boring details about who I am.

I’m 23 years old. I just graduated with a BA in English and Creative Writing from a small, private Women’s college in the South. [The oldest Women's college in the South to be exact. Props to anyone who knows the name.] I was a writer who day-lined as a Publishing Consultant for a Self-Publishing Assistance/ Digital-Printing Firm. I recently got promoted to the Customer Service Coordinator/ Front Office Manager, but it’s still just a day job. I still meet lots of colorful people, some talented and some not so much. I just recently started working part-time waiting tables at a local chain restaurant.

I am addicted to everything related to literature and try to find time to write or read something every day. Since graduating I feel out of touch with my writing, with literature and with aspects of the world in general so I am hoping this blog will allow me to reconnect internally and externally with everything.

Some things I really like other than literature are:

-history, especially military history and European politics of the 20th century

-politics, although I shamefully admit this is a new obsession and my ignorance in the matter is rather appaling

-music and movies, i am a very opinionated individual

-anything remotely related to life: real, true, struggling, un-charmed lives.

I love to edit so if I offend anyone in my comments I am sorry. Sometimes I may sound moderatly harsh but I promise I will never lie or blow smoke up anyones ass. I would appreciate it if no one tried to blow any up mine.

But feel free to comment. Anything you want to know just ask. I’m pretty much an open book.

  1. Salem College in good ole Winston-Salem NC.

  2. I’m impressed.

  3. Oh don’t be. Born and raised in Winston. Candle Tea every year and sneak a trip to Winkler’s Bakery every now and then. Great place and only 3 miles from where I’m sitting right now :-)

  4. i loved it there. i miss it like crazy.

  5. Well hopefully you’re not too far away to visit now and then. I just drive through every now and then on the way somewhere. It’s beautiful. There’s a POD/Self Publishing company here in NC that’s BIG..have frequent openings…

  6. ? which one are you referring to?

  7. :-) This is like IM. Lulu. http://www.lulu.com

  8. In Raleigh. I’m familiar with them. They are decent at design, out source their editing to a lady in Indiana, and have all their printing done through lightning source.

My company is better, we print everything in house, and do all of our own design. we don’t out source anything :)

  9. Spoken like a true company woman. I won’t be as good at guessing your company. I used XLibris twice, Authorhouse (then First Books) once, and Lulu 4 times. Lulu costs me nothing. That part I like.

  10. well our company is relatively new. Was only developed about four years ago but we are quickly taking over the printing of the southern part of the country. We actually print a lot of the galleys for John f. Blair in Winston. We don’t do editing or anything, just design if needed, printing if needed and full distribution. I personally think we have better prices than Lulu, and a better quality but that is just me personally. Still no clue who I work for? I bet you could guess it if you tried.

  11. I’m thinking, I’m thinking…don’t tell me.

  12. the more i think about it maybe you shouldn’t guess. with my two rants about my associate i would hate to appear unprofessional

  13. true…I’m still researching though..like the challenge. By full distribution you mean to “mortar and brick” bookstores as well as online? Acutal distribution or just listed to make available to order?

  14. listed to make available to order
we sale to amazon, baker and taylor, independent book stores and to the client themselves

  15. ok. I’ve formulated an answer. how do I submit my answer?

  16. i guess just say it.

  17. This is too funny. Charleston?

  18. nope

  19. DOH! Shame. :-(

  20. give up? want a hint?

  21. No. I have my entire reputation as Google Master on the line.

  22. AHA. Tennessee.

  23. no

  24. texas?

  25. sure you don’t want a hint?

  26. a little one maybe. oh the shame.

  27. I’m in North Carolina

  28. Arrrrgh…ok..hmmm..thinking

  29. OK. So I wasn’t thinking this whole time. Went to downtown WS to the Garage to hear some bands. Anyway, if I stick to the parameters you said (which included in-house printing), I’m stumped. Wherever it is, it doesn’t have a very good web presence with search engines. If you don’t want to name it here, I’m anxious to see where it is and what services are offered. Who knows, may use it in the future.

  30. Thanks. You might delete this whole exchange or a least my email address. :-)

  31. I am really enjoying perusing your blog. Your personality really shines through in your words. And I love your reading list.

I lived in Raleigh for a while, and for some reason I feel pulled to move back to NC some day. Maybe not Raleigh, but some wonderful town there.

Okay, gotta go read some more of your stuff.

  32. @ moonbeammcqueen: you are so sweet. thank you!

  33. By the way, I noticed that you stole my tagline. But that is okay, we can both be unreliable narrators. :-)

  34. Very interesting details and reliable too! Pliz write on!

  35. :)
